I read someone's livejournal post today about being a carnivore after 10 years as a vegetarian and I got so confused reading the hundreds of comments on the issue. There were comments from other meat eaters saying "YA, meat is for DINNER MAN, HAHA" and silly vegetarians saying "You are not my friend anymore WAH WAH".
So, I am asking for your honest thoughts on the topic. Post anonymously if you fear for your own sanity, or don't feel like being potentially attacked by someone who doesn't share your viewpoint. Because you all know my stance, I won't be commenting or defending my lifestyle choices here, this is all about me learning from you.
Here is what I would like to know:
1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?
2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?
3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad?
4. If you are vegetarian, do you find it difficult to think of meat eaters as compassionate people?
5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?
6. If you are vegetarian, do you purchase leather goods? How about bath/'body products, do you check for vivisection?
7. Are you vegan? How long have you been vegan? Do your doctors tell you that you are unhealthy for your choice?
8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?
9. If you are a vegetarian/vegan what is your primary reason for adopting the lifestyle? Health? animal cruelty?
10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on)
11. Peta is a little crazy, we know this. Please don't think all vegetarians are PETA. BUT! If you are vegetarian, do you donate to PETA?
12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?
13. are you a 7th level vegan?

Answer one, answer all, but thanks for any insight! <3

1. Vegetarian
2. No, that's not a vegetarian. They have different names for those who eat fish and eggs.
3. I have no idea.
4. Not at all.
6. No but it's not a self-conscious thought I just never really buy those things. My bath and body products probably have some animal or animal testing thing going on. I am easing my way into not buying those things period.
7. Well, I don't drink milk anymore but it's hard to give up things like cheese and such. Bleh. One day, one day.
9. I was eating a hotdog and started to cry because I like pigs and I like animals and I do not want them to suffer. I don't want to suffer so why should they?
11. No
13. No idea what that means.

PLEASE DON'T HATE ME
1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?
I eat meat. Everyday.

2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?
My definition of vegetarion is eating no animals. I consider chicken and fish animals, I don't know why some people don't. Eggs are not an animal in my opinion.

5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?
Nope, I may actually go vegetarian one day myself.

8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?

What is cute? Rabbit? I tried rabbit once and wasn't fond of it, about 10 years ago. The only meat I really eat regularly is beef, pork, and chicken. I wouldn't touch fish if my life depended on it.

9. If you are a vegetarian/vegan what is your primary reason for adopting the lifestyle? Health? animal cruelty?
Health would be the reason I switch, when I do.

10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.
I think the argument that they are not meant to be consumed is a bit farfetched. Circle of life. This is only my opinion.

12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?
I don't hunt, but if someone does they better damn well eat it.

01. Vegetarian.
02. I still eat eggs, but it's rare. I'm trying to slowly give it up along with cheese.
03. Everybody has an opinion on something.
04. No. Most of my friends are vegetarians, but most of my family are carnivores, I love them all the same.
05. ----
06. I'm trying to get out of the habit of purchasing leather goods. But my favorite purse is made out of leather. I refuse to buy any make-up that has been tested on animals.
07. No.
08. ----
09. Health reasons & animal cruelty. Because I live in West Texas, I see cows all the time, caged up in trailers, & I feel so awful for them.
10. ----
11. Yep. Not that much, though. Just 12$ a year or whatever it costs to become a member...
12. ----
13. Nope.

2. I echo amandavanessa on this question. I do not buy or eat fertalized eggs, however, and when purchasing eggs, I buy free range.
3. thoughts on morals, ethics, and personal entitlement
4. sometimes.
6. I buy cruelty free whenever possible. I will go out of my way to buy bath and body products that do not have any animal by products and do not practice animal testing. Because I have a 6.5AA foot, i have not been able to find shoes that are not leather that work. However, I try to buy shoes that are functional and practical....and long lasting. If an adequate option arose, i would take it!
9. animal rights
11. I considered going to work for pita

1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?
Carnivorous
2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?
vegetarian, i guess so
3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad?
because people have too much time on their hands and others are money grubbing heartless asses who will allow an animal to suffer a life of terror in lue of free range
4. If you are vegetarian, do you find it difficult to think of meat eaters as compassionate people?
NA
5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?
no, vegans, a little
i will tell you i will NEVER date a vegan
too hard to cook for
6. If you are vegetarian, do you purchase leather goods? How about bath/'body products, do you check for vivisection?
NA
7. Are you vegan? How long have you been vegan? Do your doctors tell you that you are unhealthy for your choice?
NA
8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?
fuck no, i will however resist eating comercial farmed and non kosher killed animals. But once i make more money, it is fucking kobe beef all the way.
9. If you are a vegetarian/vegan what is your primary reason for adopting the lifestyle? Health? animal cruelty?
NA
10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on)
a. I like the feeling of strength i get after eating a chop or a steak, it is as if the energy and strength of the animal is now coursing through my viens.
b. i am religiously obligated to.
c. i do NOT like animal cruelty and would prefer to have free range animals, so it is not that i like cruelty
d. i like the taste
e. ALL THINGS ON EARTH ARE ALIVE THAT WE CONSUME SAVE CHEMICALS. ANIMALS, BROKEN DOWN TO THEIR BASIC LEVEL ARE CHEMICALS. why is it ok to eat plants but not animals? with plants you are still killing something.
f. someone tell me a good reason why i shouldn't if it is freeranged and kosher killed?

11. Peta is a little crazy, we know this. Please don't think all vegetarians are PETA. BUT! If you are vegetarian, do you donate to PETA?
I am a "carnivore" and i donate to peta

12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?
I don't, i fish and eat what i catch, my uncles hunt, one hunts dear with a bow/arrow and i respect that more than gun hunting or farm food, he makes a mean venison chili.

13. are you a 7th level vegan?
what the fuck is that?
kornleaf on May 22nd, 2006 01:45 am (UTC)
an addendum, i do NOT eat pork, because i feel it is unclean, not cute. I have had rabbit and found it gamey...
lovebettie on May 22nd, 2006 01:46 am (UTC)
im vegetarian but have been trying to go vegan for a while now. the reason i am a vegetarian/want to be vegan is because my beliefs are such that i dont believe in cruelty and harm to any beings, and the factory farm industry hurts not only the animals, but us & our enviroment today. i think that most people, knowing about factory farming or not, have a double consciousness about eating meat because they know cruelty of a great sort is involved. most choose not to think about it, i.e. reaons we call certain meats but names not associated with the animal it came from.

i am disappointed in myself because i feel so strongly about this and yet still have trouble kicking dairy. why is it so hard for me to give up this comparably hard thing when i have such emotional wreckage over the process it takes to have these things? not to mention the lack of compassion.

i think that peta theoretically have the right idea but practice it in a sometimes ridiculous and often inappropriate way.

i will never lecture anyone for eating meat (there are so many diff. circumstances) but i am always interested in conversing with people about the decisions they make for their themselves, their bodies, and our planet.

xo
lovebettie on May 22nd, 2006 01:49 am (UTC)
p.s. the whole circle of life/why shouldnt i eat animals questions seems, to me, silly. here is a good reason not to eat animals: they suffer, regardless of how free-range they are raised & kosher killed.

gosh, writing all this is getting me riled up, and also mad at myself. it's such a touchy subject- i say i dont lecture people but ill bet i could lecture my head off from my little soapbox
kornleaf on May 22nd, 2006 01:52 am (UTC)

Vegetarian for 15 years, vegan for 2 years but started back in with milk when I was pregnant (craved it SO MUCH) and now I eat cheese. :( I found a great soy milk but the cheese has not been replacable yet. I don't buy any leather or fur, and our bath products are safe. We don't eat eggs, we use egg replacer (makes cakes more moist than eggs!) and of course no fish for us either. ( Totally do NOT get the "Im vegetarian but I eat fish thing at ALL)
I feel like a total failure sometimes for not being able to just complete the circle and cut out cheese. I am trying so hard to find a replacement but it has always been such a staple in my diet for the protien and calcium. I have guilt about it every time I buy it.
I I don't HATE anyone for eating meat but I am always curious if they feel secretly guilty about killing a living being when there are so many alternatives!

1. I'm vegetarian.

2. People who eat fish don't fall under my definition of vegetarian. Eggs, yes.

3. Because food is a very personal choice that touches on issues very dear to people. Cultural and gender identity is all wrapped up in food choices, not just ethics & spirituality. What a stew!

4. There are all kinds of ways to be compassionate. Abstaining from meat doesn't mean you won't be an awful person to someone else. I think of vegetarianism as one of many ways to practice compassion.

6. Yes, I do purchase leather. Generally I try to check for vivisection, but I have a very limited range of bath & body products- I'm very utilitairan about them- it's all either Tom's of Maine or Dr. Bronner's.

5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks? No, but it's annoying when I want to go to Burger King or something, and they can't. Sometimes I feel like people are vegetarian because 1. it's a fad, 2. to piss off their parents, 3. to give them another reason to feel superior to most average people. Of course, this isn't the case with most vegetarians, but I can't help but think it's true sometimes.

1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?
carnivorous

2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?
vegetarian = not eating animals. last time i checked, fish were animals. eggs are would-be animals, so i dont know how thats different (i kind of see this the same as babies. once the thing starts growing - that is a life. once the egg is fertilized - that is a life.)

3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad?
its a touchy subject because people want it to be. i think many vegetarians turn it into such a huge ordeal because they feel their environment is being threatened by meat eaters.

4. If you are vegetarian, do you find it difficult to think of meat eaters as compassionate people?
---

5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?
not by any means.

6. If you are vegetarian, do you purchase leather goods? How about bath/'body products, do you check for vivisection?
---

7. Are you vegan? How long have you been vegan? Do your doctors tell you that you are unhealthy for your choice?
---

8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?
nope. i dont eat much meat at all, no matter what it came from. mostly its because i'm so picky about it (i cant stand to eat fat, gristle, veins [chicken], etc.) that it just seems like more of a hastle than enjoyment to eat it. if you feed me meat and i enjoy the taste, ill probably eat it again no matter what it came from.

9. If you are a vegetarian/vegan what is your primary reason for adopting the lifestyle? Health? animal cruelty?
---

10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on)
if god didnt intend for us to eat cows, he would not have made them taste like hamburgers. im kidding, really. because this is life and the food chain, like death, is a big part of that, whether we like it or not. i dont agree with how many places go about producing meat for us to eat and i think that should be changed. but as far as the general concept of meat eatery goes, i see it as how we were made and just instinct/life. i think its kind of sad/funny when people are vegetarians for animal-rights reasons but still drink milk and eat eggs, etc. because animals are tortured all the same to make those products but the only difference with meat produce is that the animal is actually put out of their misery.

11. Peta is a little crazy, we know this. Please don't think all vegetarians are PETA. BUT! If you are vegetarian, do you donate to PETA?
--- and i wouldnt if i was.

12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?
i do not hunt. it makes me sad, honestly. but i dont see much wrong with hunting/fishing so long as you eat your kill. i think the animals eaten via hunting are a lot healthier and delt with more humanely than any prepacked meat product.

13. are you a 7th level vegan?

2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs? no, no

1. carnivorous - I eat meat sometimes, but eat more fish and salads and cheese and stuff.
2. I know several people who hate meat and the idea of eating it, but are fine eating fish and eggs ... I think that if we are speaking strictly of the term then no, fish and eggs can't be considered "vegetarian" foods ... but I think realistically, people can certainly eat fish and eggs and still consider themselves vegetarian.
3. because these things are usually deeply intwined with people's overall belief systems and so most have a strong stance one way or the other. other times, the people just like to judge other people or want a way to make themselves feel better about the superiority of their behavior/beliefs.
4. I'm a meat-eater and I'm a compasionate person!
5. no, I don't think my vegetarian friends are freaks at all.

8. lol. Cute animals? I really don't eat much as far as animals go ... chicken sometimes, bacon, beef, and that's about it ... I definitely don't eat bunnies or deer or birds or anything like that. :D

10. I don't eat much meat, but when I do, I'm okay with it because of the food chain, because they offer a good selection of nutrients, and also I generally try to eat free-range stuff. Eating meat doesn't mean I enjoy animal cruelty or to see anything suffer.
11. n/a

1. Carnivore! Though, I suppose omnivore is a better definition, really, since I don't JUST eat meat.
2. Eggs yes, fish no. Though they have all those silly other labels, pescatarian and such. Mostly I think it'd be better to just say, "I eat fish" than to say "I'm a vegetarian who eats fish."
3. Vegetarians I think start most of the anger in this debate. They get pissy because people don't see their side of things and give up meat also. Meat eaters get pissy because vegetarians get on their case about eating meat. This is at least my experience in Philly, where veggies are fucking VISCIOUS!
4. N/A
5. Not at all. I see their point, respect is, and sometimes even wish I could pull it off. I like meat though. I don't eat a ton of it anyhow, only occasionally.
6. I'm not veggie, but I still check to make sure that lots of my bath/body products are animal friendly/free.
7. N/A
8. Nope, I eat the ones I like.

10. I don't really have a good explanation for this except that I like meat and so I eat it. If meat weren't super readily available, I wouldn't eat it, but because it is I do. I'm not one of those meat eaters who refuses to eat vegetarian fare, I admit that some fake meats are yummy and veg food is generally delish.
11. N/A
12. Nope. Not a hunter. The thought of actually killing something isn't appealing.

HAHA, I know I said "carnivore" kind of as a joke but it works for some people I know!

1. vegetarian
2. vegetarians do not eat fish, but they may eat eggs & still be a vegetarian (i still eat eggs, but free range blah blah and i am trying desperately to give them up)
3. i can only speak of the ones who have spoken up to me about it - because meat eaters want to think they are superior, vegetarians do think they are superior, and vegans know that they are superior
4. yes, very much so
5. n/a
6. no fur, no leather, no products that use or test on animals
7. no, i am a ranch dressing and an egg away from being vegan. i was vegan for a year in high school, but i have not yet found a cure for ranch dressing. i'll take suggestions.

also, after reading through your other comments i find it really interesting to see all the carnivores saying that the debate and anger over the subject is all due to vegetarians, when in my 15 years as a vegetarian i've never once started an agruement over what people eat, but on a fairly regular basis someone that thinks i should eat meat tells me exactly how stupid i am. irony abounds.
bruisedhips on May 22nd, 2006 04:01 am (UTC)
I have to agree with this even though Im sure someone will jump right at the chance to say that they no "SO MANY" vegetarians who are preachy. I have honestly never met one but Im sure they exist if so many people have encountered them?
My experience last week at the motorcycle weekend was that as a vegetarian, you cannot eat in the presence of a meat eater without condescending commentary. For example, at dinner the first night, a man at our table noted that we weren't eating the meat sauce and after finding out we are vegetarian actually rambled off about 3 offensive jokes about vegetarians and them explained that animals are made of meat, etc. you know the type. (Ryan had to leave the table)
The next day at the BBQ it was impossible for us to get a decent lunch and even my own father failed to offer a vegetarian option for the many diners he was accommodating.
That night at dinner my Mom cut Owen a huge slice of Calamari after saying "can't he just have a tiny bite" and big dealing it so I have to be the bad guy all the time.
WHAT THE HELL, MAN. rrrrrrrrrr.

1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous? carnivorous
2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs? no, yes
3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad? i've never been able to figure that one out.
5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks? nope. i love my veggie friends just as much as my non-veggie friends.
8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals? no, i eat the standards. doesn't matter how cute they are.
10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on). i just think it is a matter of personal choice. i don't cook much now, but when i did it was mostly vegetarian. now i just eat what is put in front of me and i'm greatful for it.
12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill? no, but if i did, i would.

Carnivorous
1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?
Carnivorous

2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?
Definitely not.

3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad?
I think any topic that questions a person's lifestyle tends to make people defensive. This one, however, I think makes those vegetarians who chose this lifestyle due to animal cruelty issues angry because they are fighting an ideological battle.

5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?
I by no means think they are freaks, I just hope they are smart about it and supplement their diet with the nutrients they aren't receiving.

8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?
Uh, no. I don't eat lamb or rabbit or deer because I didn't grow up eating those things. Besides, I eat pork and I think pigs are pretty cute.

10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on)
My main reason for eating meat is because I was raised having steak and potatoes every Sunday for my entire life and I like it. I think that if I thought about what it is that I eat a little more I might be just as disgusted by the idea as any vegetarian, but I don't really think about. It's kind of the same deal as hot dogs or Velveeta - it may not be made of ideal ingredients but I like the way it tastes and I've gotta eat something.

12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?
I do not hunt, but if you do you'd best damn well be eating what you kill.
a_vivid_dreamer on May 22nd, 2006 04:50 am (UTC)
1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?

vegan

2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?

"vegetarians" eat eggs. but not fish. vegans don't eat eggs.

3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad?

i think it makes vego's mad because eating meat generally involves long term torture and brutal murder of animals all for the sake of an 8 minute pleasure of eating the flesh of the animal. i mean, if someone tortures a human and brutally murders them, for the sake of an 8 minute pleasure, people get FURIOUS. i think it's pretty understandable that people would be outraged about mass torture and murder.

i think meat eaters get angry about it because the second they find out someone is veg'n, they know the person is probably thinking about how cruel murderous they are, and people don't like others thinking things like that about them. i think a lot of meat eaters are ashamed of themselves and they get embarrassed and the anger is a cover up for their embarrassment.

4. If you are vegetarian, do you find it difficult to think of meat eaters as compassionate people?

yes. i find it very difficult. i realise that meat eaters can be compassionate in other ways, but i have a hard time thinking of people as compassionate when they pay people to torture and brutally murder animals over and over again.

5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?

NA

6. If you are vegetarian, do you purchase leather goods? How about bath/'body products, do you check for vivisection?

No i don't purchase leather. for a while i purchased 2nd hand leather shoes that were very old-looking, figuring that noone else would wear them and they were just going to waste, but now days i just buy non-leather shoes. i don't use many bath products, just soap, and for that i use olive oil based soaps, rather than animal-fat based soaps. i can't believe people seriously wash themselves with dead animal fat.

7. Are you vegan? How long have you been vegan? Do your doctors tell you that you are unhealthy for your choice?

yes i'm vegan. i've been vegan for two years, and almost vegan for 5 years. no my dr's don't tell me i'm unheatlhy for it.

8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?

NA

9. If you are a vegetarian/vegan what is your primary reason for adopting the lifestyle? Health? animal cruelty?

i choose to be vegan because i think it's completely unneccesary to deliberately torture animals in order to sustain my life. putting an animal through an entire life of intense pain and discomfort to sustain me for a mere 24 hours or so is COMPLETE OVER-KILL, especially when they are PLENTY of other non-animal food sources available to me all the time. repeating that abuse over and over again, torturing and killing thousands of beings all for one life... it's just so fucking selfish.

vegan food sources are also a lot more sustainable and better for the environment.

10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on)

NA

11. Peta is a little crazy, we know this. Please don't think all vegetarians are PETA. BUT! If you are vegetarian, do you donate to PETA?

No i don't donate to PETA, though i don't frown on them or anything. If i had spare money though, i would donate it to the development of lab grown meat. ideally i would love all humans to convert to veganism, but i am a realist, and i don't think it's socially likely that the moral mindsets of billions of people will be changed, and i think it's more likely that people will change to eating lab-grown meat, especially if there are benefits like it being cheaper, healthier, etc.

12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?

NA

13. are you a 7th level vegan?

no.

1. omnivorous. tho I tend to avoid mammals when i do eat meat.
3. clash of values and neither "side" understands the other.
4. curiously, I find myself to be as, or more, compassionate than most of my vegetarian/vegan friends
5. no. not at all. they just have some slightly different measures.
8. which animals are "cute"?
10. probably lack of exposure to the killing process. if I actually had to do the killing, etc, I doubt I could do it.
12. no. I don't hunt. never have, never will.
13. there is no shadow in the refridgerator ... that little light is burnt out.

1. Are you vegetarian or carnivorous?
carnivorous
2. Do you think that you can still be a VEGEtarian and eat fish? How about eggs?
I'm not sure. I think, as with most things, the moment we start placing labels on people based on their actions...we're in trouble. Some people don't eat meat, some people do. Some people don't eat red meat.
3. Why do you think it is that this topic makes everyone so mad?
People don't like it when others are different (beliefs, diet, whatever)
4. If you are vegetarian, do you find it difficult to think of meat eaters as compassionate people?
Can't answer that
5. If you are a carnivore, do you think your vegetarian friends are freaks?
Not at all, I married one.
6. If you are vegetarian, do you purchase leather goods? How about bath/'body products, do you check for vivisection?
N/A
7. Are you vegan? How long have you been vegan? Do your doctors tell you that you are unhealthy for your choice?
N/A
8. Are you one of those carnivores that doesn't eat "cute" animals?
no. I eat what I eat.
9. If you are a vegetarian/vegan what is your primary reason for adopting the lifestyle? Health? animal cruelty?
n/a
10. if you are a carnivore, explain why you have no problem eating animals.(the subject most vegetarians I know would like insight on)
I was raised eating meat, I enjoy the taste and for whatever reason, have been able to disconnect the two things (living animal from food on my table). It's a little ignorant, I know. It makes me sad to think this may disappoint you
11. Peta is a little crazy, we know this. Please don't think all vegetarians are PETA. BUT! If you are vegetarian, do you donate to PETA?
12. If you are a carnivore, do you hunt? Do you eat what you kill?
I don't see a lot of appeal to hunting. I fly fish but rarely take anything home. I like catch and release for the longevity of the sport.
13. are you a 7th level vegan?
I don't think I am
